Herman Charles Weigelt

Herman Charles Weigelt, 89, of Round Top, died Jan. 16, 2014 from complications of a Christmas Eve stroke. Born in Round Top on July 9, 1924, the son of Ewald and Ellie (Schulze)Weigelt, he was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem

Lutheran Church. He married Julie (Mache) Weigelt on June 5, 1954 and would have celebrated 40 years this summer.

Herman served in the U.S. Navy LCS and LCT Flotilla Six in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked as a

journeyman carpenter for H. A. Lott, retiring after 40 years of service, working on several Houston landmarks, including

Gulfgate Mall, Houston’s first shopping mall, the Astrodome, Summit and many others. Upon retirement he returned to  Round Top and became a full-time rancher. While in Houston, he was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and Park Place Lutheran Church. Upon retirement, he again became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and expended many hours helping in the church’s restoration in 1991 for its 125th anniversary. He was a 64-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners of America, Local 551. During his lifetime Herman was an active member in his community, being a member of the Round Top Rifle Association, Sons of Herman Lodge 151, American Legion, Round Top-Warrenton Fire Department Auxiliary, and a founding member of the Round Top Historical Society. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Jim Parish, Jeanette and Mark Shepherd, Denise and Mike McHugh, Karen and Kenneth Koerth; seven grandchildren, Gene Lambert, James Parish, Jr., Julie Whiteneck and husband Chris, Vincent Shepherd and wife, Lesley, Megan McHugh, Sean McHugh, Nicole Koerth, and Zachary Koerth; one great-granddaughter, Emerson Whiteneck; two sisters, Ethel Mikeska and Virginia Weigelt; one brother, Marcus Weigelt; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie; sister, Edith Klump, Eurline Lyman and

brother, Edmund Weigelt. Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Round Top. The Rev. John David Nedbalek officiated. Interment was in the Florida Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Round Top-Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 145, Round Top, Texas 78954. Fayette Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
