The suspect killed in a shootout with New Orleans Police Sunday night was originally from La Grange.

Reginald Bursey, the 32-year-old gunman, had a history with law enforcement in this area.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson told reporters that uniformed officers saw Bursey at a bus stop and attempted to question him about an armed robbery that happened in that city a week before. Ferguson said the suspect pulled a weapon and fired at two officers.

Five innocent bystanders at the bus stop were hit by bullets in the exchange of gunfire. One person remains in critical condition, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper. It was not immediately clear whether the bystanders were shot by Bursey, the police, or both.

Gunfire continued as officers chased the suspect down a street, where a Louisiana State Police Trooper who was responding to a call for assistance shot the suspect. Bursey was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans where he died from injuries.
