LGISD Enrollment Down 1-Percent

In last Friday’s paper we have coverage of several topics discussed at the September meeting of the La Grange school board. Here’s more: 

Fuel Up to Play 60

La Grange ISD got a check for their participation in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Joann Knox from Dairy Max presented $4,000 to the district – $2,000 to the Hermes Intermediate physical education program, “All Abilities – Activate Your School,” for a variety of equipment and $2,000 to the Hermes Intermediate cafeteria  child nutrition department for the Breakfast for Everyone program.

Fueled Up is a program of the National Football League and the National Dairy Council that grants money to school districts for participation in innovative physical education and nutrition programs. Knox told the board that other schools have followed the example of Nancy Fritsch-Tielsch in child nutrition.

Bilingual Education

Kim Miori, director of federal programs, shared a summary report on the 2016-17 bilingual/ESL (English as a second language). In 2016-17 there were 264 students enrolled in the program, 24 of whom exited the program by showing proficiency in English and other subject areas. 

Appraisal District Board

Dudley Piland was appointed for another two-year term as a director of the Fayette County Appraisal District. 

Administration Reports

The current enrollment for LGISD is 1,963. This is down by 1.12 percent from last year. Stacy Eilers reported there are currently thirty-two students enrolled in the Little Leopards after school program. They have hired some high school students to help with managing the increased numbers. Neal Miller reported on the impact of Hurricane Harvey. There was clean-up due to flooding. The cafeteria had to make plans for meals that did not require water for preparation or clean-up due to the boil water notice. Transportation had to be flexible. There have been new stops made available due to displaced students. There has been a new bus route added. A new bus is to be delivered soon which will be used for long trips. 

A new requirement for the cafeteria: students in grades prek-kindergarten will only be allowed to drink white milk. Students in first grade and up will still have the option of choosing flavored milk.
