Dispelling the Myths

Well, the much misunderstood and always controversial Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has passed another hurdle. It’s been about five weeks since the state exchanges opened for business and the Republic is still standing. Given the hyperbole that has been flying in all directions this week, it’s a wonder any of us survived. With this in mind, I would like to dispel some of the more pernicious myths regarding this important legislation.
• Obamacare is a “government takeover” of healthcare. Well, no, it isn’t. In fact, it is the exact opposite. The insurance sold through the state exchanges comes from private companies. The government is arranging the meeting, but it is the private individual and the private insurance provider that conduct the transaction. With the exceptions of Medicare and Medicaid, the Federal government is not the insurance provider.
