Historic Sawmill on the Move

Morris Zapalac’s home on the Colorado River near Ellinger may be unique – it is built entirely of pecan wood. And it’s all
because Hurricane Carla blew down “countless” pecan trees on the Zapalac ranch in 1961, according to his  granddaughter, Stephanie. “In fact, every single wooden board in Morris’s current house is pecan wood,” Stephanie Mueller
said last week. Mueller was taking a day off from her job as a curator at the Witte Museum in San Antonio to document the
transfer of the historic Zapalac sawmill to the Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange
