Like the vast majority of Fayette County farm youngsters who grew up during the Depression, Florence Hertel Farek didn’t

own an overflowing toy box. “We used our imaginations instead,” says Florence, a selfprofessed tomboy from Freyburg.

During the summertime, when they had finished their chores, she and her two older brothers, Nolan and Melvin, headed outdoors
