Donald Ray Newman

Donald Ray Newman, 76, of La Grange, died Thursday, March 20, 2014. Donald was born in Mendoza on Feb. 13, 1938, the son of Henry Clay Newman and Opal (Gibbons) Newman. He married Joyce Ebner on Nov. 27, 1958 at St. John Lutheran Church in Houston. Donald was employed in the Maintenance Department of Houston Lighting & Power from 

1963-1977. He was employed as a supervisor for LCRA from 1977-1997 at which time he retired with twenty years of service. Donald was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Board of Trustees. He was a farmer and a skilled  wood craftsman. He enjoyed gardening and hunting. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce; two daughters: Donna Ahart and husband, Sam of Katy; and Diane Newman of Cedar Park; son, David Newman of Austin; two brothers: Dean Newman and wife, Pat, of Buchanan Dam; John Newman and wife, Tommye, of Houston; two sisters: Rebecca Light and husband, Jerry, of Florence; Fern Donohue and husband, Terry, of Pittman, N.J.; seven grandchildren: Holly, Heather, Theresa, Danielle, Nathan, Abby and Owen; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Marion Newman. Visitation was held on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home. Family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m.  Funeral services were held at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in La Grange at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Burial followed at the La Grange City Cemetery.
