Johnny Duane Sharp, born Jan. 24, 1943 to John Wesley and Norma Kathryn Sharp in Mt. Carmel, Ill., died at his home in Kirtley on April 15, 2014. Johnny and his wife Josie began a part time business/hobby as Texas Wood Products in Austin in 1986 that turned into a full time business in 1998. Mr. Sharp and Josie moved to Smithville that same year. Texas Wood Products produced bandsaw mill custom cut lumber, playhouses, deer blinds, cedar post, firewood and other wood products. Their work gained the attention of a National Magazine, Sawmill and Woodlot, which featured them as the cover story in the 2000 April/May issue. Following a devastating fire in December of 2013, the decision to retire from the wood business was made. Johnny also was the owner of Sharp Sand and Gravel Company, which will continue limited operations for a while with sales of road base, select fill and sand. Being a man of many talents, Johnny was a skilled welder, carpenter, furniture builder, plumber, mechanic, heavy equipment operator, big-rig truck driver, and general “Fix-It” man. He held a Life Membership in the Texas Rifle Association, was a member of the National Rifle Association and a Past Exalted Ruler of The Benevolent, Protective order of Elks, Austin Lodge 201. Johnny was a regular contributor and participant at fund raisers for many churches and charitable causes. He was also known for the love of his family, fishing, hunting, dancing and listening to Country Music. His is survived by his wife Josie Wiltzius; daughter, Tammy Sharp Meeks and husband Robert, of Terre Haute, Ind.; son, John Sharp, of Georgetown; son, Sean Travis Sharp and wife Elaine, of Bone Gap, Ill.; step-daughter Natalie Mackey and husband Arthur; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service to honor Mr. Johnny Sharp will be announced at a future date. All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home in Smithville is in charge of arrangements.
