Susan (Sue) Grace Young Robbins
Susan (Sue) Grace Young Robbins was born June 9, 1916, the youngest child of Zed and Belle Carson Young. She attended school in West Point and Kirtley, but graduated from Smithville High School in 1933. She was always known as Sue to her family, but Grace to her fellow teachers. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers’ College in San Marcos for one semester and started teaching school in Fayette and Bastrop County. She taught in several one- or two-teacher schools including Byler, Pine Springs, Mullins Prairie, Sayers, and West Point. She did not finish her degree until 1944 after she had married Bob Robbins of Muldoon in 1941. She stopped teaching to raise her only child, Bobbie Grace Robbins Stevens, of Katy. She returned to teaching in La Grange for seven years, Flatonia for seven years, and an adult education class in Flatonia for older people who had never finished school. She was really proud of the progress of many of those people and talked about that experience with great fondness. She has said many times that she taught everything from first grade to senior English. She was a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers even though she had so many breaks in service that she did not actually retire. Sue was an avid historian. She was proud of being a descendant of Samuel and Jane Kerr Young who moved from Tennessee to Texas in 1840. This qualified her as a Daughter of the Republic of Texas which she did not join until just a few years ago when her cousin, Jo White, encouraged her to join. There are five generations of her family buried in the Woods Prairie Cemetery near her childhood home west of West Point, but she will be buried in Pitman Cemetery in Muldoon with her husband’s family. Her only survivors are her daughter, Bobbie, and her niece, Melba Fay Young of West Point, and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; her brothers, Alfred and Frank Young of West Point; and sister-in-laws Elva Robbins McLean, Pauline Robbins Bluhm, and Lottie Laufer Young.
