A Fiery Fourth of July
The thunderstorms that rolled through Fayette County on the afternoon of July 4 made for wetter and thus safer conditions for those people popping fireworks, but that didn’t mean it was a quiet holiday for local firefighters. Friday afternoon at
about 3:28 p.m., lightning struck a fiberglass tank at Key Energy’s saltwater disposal plant at 8695 FM 2145 in the Nechanitz area north of La Grange, touching off a massive blaze that destroyed the facility, which disposes of the saltwater produced as a byproduct of oil production.
