John Henry Cook, 78, of Ellinger died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014. John was born in Ellinger on March 13, 1936, the son of Henry Frank Cook and Betty Ann (Krenek) Cook. He married Bernetta Schertz on Nov. 27, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville. John worked for Dow Chemical as a Draftsman, Operator and in the Engineering Department when he retired in March, 1993 after 36 ½ years of service. He served in the Army National Guard retiring after 22 ½ years of service. He was an active member of the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce and was Grand Marshall in the Chamber of Commerce Ellinger Parade. He was named Fayette County senior citizen of the year. John was a 4th Degree
Knight and a member of the Knights of Columbus for 60 years. He served in various KC councils which included  Fayetteville- Ellinger KC Council #3168 and was a charter member of the Angleton KC Council #5155. He also served as a
Grand Knight in Angleton from 1977-78. John was the Church Council President and Church Bazaar Chairman at St. Basil’s Catholic Church in Angleton. He is survived by his wife, Bernetta, of 55 years; two sons: Jonathan G. Cook of Angleton and Jeffrey G. Cook of La Grange; daughter, Gerardette Martin and husband, Patrick, of Pearland; two grandchildren: Jessica Marie Martin of Austin and Edwin Cook of La Grange. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Baby Boy Cook; and daughter-in-law, Marie Cook. First visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014
from 2 to 7 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located at 1713 N. Tinsley St. in Angleton with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. A second visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Koenig & Strickland Funeral
Home and from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellinger with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. at the church.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, located at 815 St. Mary’s Church Road in Ellinger on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
