Gladys Millie Shoppa, 88, of La Grange died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange, after a brief illness. Gladys and her twin sister, Earline, were born in Gay Hill, Texas on Aug. 18, 1926, the daughters of the late Louis and Millie (Kocian) Shoppa. As an adult, she lived in San Marcos and Corpus Christi before she moved to San Antonio, where she owned a home-style restaurant, Gladys’s Place, and a dance hall, the Corral, which featured many regional bands, including Adolph Hofner and the Pearl Wranglers. She retired in La Grange in 2004. Gladys loved music, and she had a quick-witted sense of humor. As a businesswoman and in her retirement, she was fiercely independent. She is survived by her brother, Lee Roy Shoppa of La Grange; her brother-in-law, Elwert Kansteiner of Austin; a niece and a nephew, Shirley Schaeffer and Mike Shoppa of La Grange; a nephew Gary Kansteiner of Austin; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Earline Kansteiner; her sister-in-law, Evelynn Shoppa; and her parents, Louis and Millie Shoppa.
