How Milton Koenning Found His Calling
By ELAINE THOMAS
In January 1947, Milton Koenning was happy to be back home in Winchester after one and a half years in the U.S. Army. He also was happy to no longer be retrieving mines from fields in Panama, where he had been stationed. Still, he didn’t know what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Milton’s dad, Willie Koenning, suggested he give farming a try. “I knew what I would be getting into. I was born in 1927 on a farm near the community of Sand in Bastrop County, where my dad and mother were tenant farmers. In 1932, we moved to the John Noack farm, about five miles from where we live now,” he recalls.
