Prowling the Pacific With the Black Cat Squadron
By ELAINE THOMAS
When Cleve Friddell volunteered for the U.S. Navy Air Corps 10 months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, he never dreamed that one day he’d be part of the Black Cat Squadron. Cleve spent his first two years in the service overhauling Pratt & Whitney airplane engines at Alameda Naval Air Station across the bay from San Francisco.
