Norman Berger
Funeral services for Norman Berger, 76, of Giddings, were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Burial followed in the Giddings City Cemetery. Norman Otto Berger was born on April 9, 1939 in Giddings, the son of Walter Willie Berger and Minna Irene (Biehle) Berger. He served briefly in the U.S. Army. Norman was united in marriage with Mildred Fay Baack on May 27, 1961 at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Max Studtmann. Their union was blessed with three children, Norma, David and Darald. Norman and Mildred had a deep and lasting love for each other that might not have been the kind of love that others would recognize, but it was their own special relationship. Mildred preceded him in death on May 5, 2015 after nearly 54 years together. Norman was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served as an usher formany years. He worked for Nutrena Feed Mill, M & M Lumber, Kieschnick’s Feed Store, and retired after 35 years with the Texas Highway Department. After retiring, he worked for Giddings Livestock Commission for 17 years. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, working, and talking to just about anyone that he met. You never had to wonder what Norman’s opinion was because he would let you know it whether you wanted it or not. Norman passed away the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 at Oakland Manor Nursing Center in Giddings following a battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Berger and Minna Berger Hobratschk; his step-father, Alfred Hobratschk; his wife, Mildred Berger; his great granddaughter, Tessa Pollard; his sister, Adeline Schroeder and her husband, Willie; three brothers, Willie Hobratschk, Albert Hobratschk and Herman Hobratschk; six brothers-in-law, Clarence Noack, Edmund Kappler, Otto Baack and his wife, Billie Ruth, Otis Baack and his wife, Lorene, Wilson Daggs and Emil Proske, and a sister-in-law, Inda Baack. Norman is survived by his three children, Norma Gray and her husband, Roy of Wichita Falls, David Berger of Giddings and Darald Berger and his wife, Rebecca of Leander; five grandchildren, Terrie Pollard of McDade, Michael Gray of Mc- Dade, Daniel Gray of Giddings, Brooke Berger of Leander and Bowen Berger of Leander; one great grandson, Sammy Pollard of McDade; three sisters, Irene Noack of Serbin, Annie Mae Kappler of Warda, and Carolyn Mitschke and her husband, Clarence of Houston; five sistersin- law, Gertrude Hobratschk of Giddings, Gertrude Hobratschk of Kerrville, Eunice Hobratschk of Giddings, Marilyn Daggs of Ft. Worth and Francis Proske of Giddings, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice. Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings was in charge of arrangements.
