Sticker Shock: Land Appraisals are Up 17.4%, Hundreds of Appeals Expected

By ANDY BEHLEN  Fayette County Appraisal District sent out notices on May 13 informing property owners of changes to their appraised values, and many got a surprise when they opened the envelope. Average land appraisals increased by 17.4 percent countywide, according to Fayette County Chief Appraiser Richard Moring. Some parts of the county, especially in the Round Top area, are seeing double and triple increases in land values. Moring attributed the increased land appraisals to a strong real estate market in Fayette County even as other sectors of the local economy have softened.
