Kolkhorst Asks For Public Meeting on Austin Sludge

By ANDY BEHLEN  Senator Lois Kolkhorst last week requested a public meeting from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality over the permit application to dump sewage sludge from the City of Austin onto about 1,665 acres of land in Fayette County along the Colorado River.

Her request effectively ensures that a public meeting will take place. Fayette County Commissioners Court also petitioned TCEQ for a public meeting on Monday, June 13. TCEQ has not yet scheduled one.

Kolkhorst issued the following statement on Tuesday: “The recent floods in the area have revealed the possible harm that the proposed site may pose to local water supplies and the surrounding environment. It is precariously close to the Colorado River, which only recently overflowed its banks, causing massive damage. I feel that a public meeting in Fayette County would be the best way for the TCEQ to obtain all necessary information before moving forward on this project. I stand arm and arm with the people of Fayette County to make sure our voices are heard.”

State Representative Leighton Schubert issued a statement on Wednesday opposing the permit.

“The people of Fayette County, through their local elected leadership, have spoken loud and clear that they do not want this facility near their communities. Its negative impact would be felt for years to come and I join with my constituents in opposition to this proposed project,” Schubert said.

A group opposing the permit is meeting at Joe’s Place in Fayetteville on Wednesday, June 22.  Organizer Stephanie Jurek said anyone who supports their cause is welcome to join.
