Numerous Fires Sparked Along I-10
By ANDY BEHLEN Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department and Flatonia Fire and Rescue battled a series of grass fires along Interstate 10 Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities had not determined the cause of the fires at the time of this writing, but Schulenburg Fire Chief Jeff Proske said they likely started from a vehicle traveling westbound.
The first 911 call came in at 2:30 p.m. reporting a fire in the ditch near the 671 mile marker. Other calls followed reporting more fires along I-10 toward Flatonia. Proske called for mutual aid from Flatonia Fire and Rescue before firefighters reached the first fire.
Schulenburg and Flatonia firefighters put out three fires in the Engle area. They traveled west, putting out several more fires toward the county line. Flatonia Fire and Rescue continued into Gonzales County, assisting departments there with additional grass fires.
Proske said the string of fires started east of Engle and continued all the way to Luling.
