The Wine Haus in Flatonia held a grand opening celebration on Friday, Sept. 23. Over 50 friends and neighbors joined owner Lori Berger at the newly-rennovated historic building located at 110 W. North Main Street in Flatoina.

Berger, former Flatonia mayor and current board member of the Lower Colorado River Authority, purchased the building and began rennovations two years ago.

The place offers a nice selection of Texas, domestic and imported wines and beers. Chef Deidre Martel dishes out small plates and dinner specials. Patrons can watch sports on the large television in the bar.

The Wine Haus is open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

History of 110 W. North Main

The lot’s recorded history goes back to the turn of the last century, when R.L. Simmons operated a grocery store in a wood-frame building that stood on the site. The Flatonia Argus reported in November 1900 that G.C. Simmons and Freda Blucher opened a dress making shop in part of the building.

The building was demolished and a new brick building was erected in 1904. The Simmons grocery store moved next door in 1913 – now the location of Migl’s Grocery Store. Lauterstein’s Department Store occupied the building from 1915 to 1917. Wm. Finemann operated a business of some sort in the building after that.

The building got a tile-clad storefront and large chamfered display windows in 1930. Weimar businessman Moe Klein bought the building in 1936, where he operated a dry goods store until 1976.

Ed and Carlene Carlock were the last owners of the building. There they operated The Aston, an antiques business, for 27 years until both passed away – Carlene in 2009 and Ed in 2013.
