Warrenton Shopper Accidentally Fires a Rifle at Cole’s Antiques

Patrons of Cole’s Antiques in Warrenton got a scare Monday, Sept. 26, around noon as a shopper accidently discharged a firearm that was for sale inside the venue.

According to Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office, an 80-year-old man was inspecting a Winchester .30-06 rifle when he tried “dry-firing” the gun, assuming it was unloaded. There was a round in the weapon’s chamber. Beyer said the man pointed the rifle toward the ceiling when it fired.

Deputy Mark Zimmermann, Sgt. Ron Naumann and Investigator Angela Lala of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident. Beyer said the officers were unable to find a bullet hole in the ceiling, leading them to believe the round may have been a blank cartridge.

The gunshot frightened many shoppers inside the venue, but no one was injured.

In response to the incident, Beyer said the venue owner has implemented new rules requiring dealers to place safety devices on any firearms for sale and to display all guns with the bolt or action open.

Beyer said the shooter could face a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment. He said deputies believe the gunshot was an accident and have declined to file charges at the time. He said investigators would present the case to County Attorney Peggy Supak for review.
