Brenda Rehak’s appointment to the Schulenburg City Council was again a topic of discussion at the City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 17. More than 30 residents attended the meeting, with one citizen calling for her resignation. In addition, Councilman Harvey Hercik questioned the validity of her appointment.

Rehak took her Council seat at Monday’s meeting for the first time since Hercik defeated her in the May election.

“I come here tonight as a taxpaying, voting citizen who feels betrayed as a voter by this council’s appointment of Mrs. Brenda Rehak,” said resident John Schindler during the public comment period. “I ask this Council to support me in asking Mrs. Rehak to step down and resign her appointment.”

Schindler said the City should have called a special election to fill the seat or should have left the seat open until the election in May 2017.

“Either way, it would have given the voters a chance to decide instead of three or four members of the Council,” Schindler said.

Later in the meeting, Councilman Harvey Hercik, who has opposed Rehak’s appointment since the Oct. 3 vote, asked City Attorney Monte Akers about the validity of Rehak’s oath of office.
