A beloved husband, father, son and friend, Charles David Childers, Sr., lost his battle with the consequences of a spinal cord injury on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at Warm Springs Medical Center in Luling. The son of Charles Cantrell and Zetta-Mae Childers, Dave was born on Jan. 26, 1945, in the Dow Hospital in Freeport, Texas. He inherited his fiery red hair and Irish temperament from his father and his tender heart from his mother. Dave graduated from Brazosport Senior High School and entered the apprentice program of Pipefitters Local #211, earning an Associate’s degree in this field. He worked as a pipefitter for nearly 30 years, and remained a staunch union supporter all his life. In January 1965, Dave married Linda Cox of Freeport and they made their home on the family ranch in Angleton. His two sons, Charles Jr., born on Oct. 20, 1965, and Shawn Patrick, born on Feb. 3, 1967, were the pride and joy of his life. The Childers family moved to the La Grange area in 1979, where Dave continued to work at job sites in Austin and the surrounding area. He also raised some fine quarter horses. After retiring due to a multitude of health problems, Dave enjoyed following the Texas Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys, and Houston Texans teams, and tracing his family genealogy. Dave is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda, his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jr. and Gina Childers of Cypress, and his son Shawn Childers and girlfriend, Carolyn Koether, of La Grange. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren Tyler and Tori Carter of Cypress, and his granddaughter Brittany Montgomery of Sherman. The family wishes to thank the Fayette County EMS personnel, and the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Mark’s Medical Center of La Grange, Seton Brackenridge Medical Center of Austin, and Warm Springs Medical Center of Luling. The outstanding kindness and professional care that Dave received is deeply appreciated. A visitation for friends was held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in La Grange. Interment followed in La Grange City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any remembrances be made to First United Methodist Church of La Grange, or to the charity of their choice. Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange was in charge of arrangements.
