La Grange Water Fix Could Cost City $814,000

La Grange utility customers recently received another letter in the mail warning about elevated levels of trihalomethanes in the city’s tap water. City manager Shawn Raborn plans to present a plan to City Council that he said should fix what has become a tricky problem for the city’s water system.

Trihalomethanes are a group of chemicals formed when chlorine added to the water interacts with organic matter in the water system. Raborn said the organic matter originates naturally from the city’s water wells, which he said are rather shallow compared to other communities.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency warns that long-term exposure to trihalomethanes could lead to a range of health effects, including cancer. The EPA limited the level of trihalomethanes in municipal water supplies to 80 parts per billion in 2004. Prior to that the limit was 100 parts per billion.
