Remember When?

Jan. 6-10, 1967 Schulenburg civic leaders were urging Commissioners Court to establish a branch courthouse in that city. Such a location could provide offices for Social Security and welfare officers, driver’s license examiners, justice of the peace, constable, deputy sheriff and highway patrolmen, as well as serve as a location for tax collecting and voting. County Judge Ike Petras estimated the building would cost around $20,000 and, if authorized by the court, would likely be paid out of the permanent improvement funds and handled by time warrants. The county already owned land in Schulenburg for a building site.

Air Force Major John F. Rhemann of Round Top received the Air Medal 21 years after it was awarded during World War II when he served as a private first class radio gunner on a Scout bomber plane in the Pacific Theater. Signed by the then Secretary of the Navy, Francis P. Matthews, it read in part, “From 9 June to 6 August 1945, Private Rhemann participated in low-level bombing and rocket attacks on bivouac areas and automatic weapon concentrations.

Despite hostile anti-aircraft fire on several of these attacks and the hazards of overwater flights in active combat areas within effective range of known enemy anti-aircraft batteries, Private Rhemann rendered invaluable assistance to his pilot and contributed materially to the success of his plane in inflicting extensive damage on the assigned targets.” While Major Rhemann was on active duty as commander of the 612th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam, his wife, Celeste, was residing in Round Top with their four children, Forrest, 14; Deana, 12; Jeffrey, 10; and Leah Beth, 6.
