Local Senator Files “Bathroom Bill” with Lt. Governor’s Backing

Republican State Senator Lois Kolkhorst (who represents Fayette County in State Senate District 18) filed a bill last week proposing new state regulations regarding who may use public restrooms in schools and government buildings.

Her office’s press release on the bill can be viewed on Page 3A today.

The first section of the bill would prohibit governmental entities such as cities, counties and public universities from adopting policies concerning the designation or use of public restrooms. The bill’s second section requires public school districts to adopt policies stating that public restrooms be designated and used according to a person’s biological sex.

Kolkhorst told reporters in a press conference last Thursday that she filed the bill in response to recent action by the federal government concerning transgender students in public schools.

“I filed this legislation not to start a controversy but to end one,” Kolkhorst said.
