Schulenburg’s Balzer Feed Mill to Close

John Deere Dealership Could Be Opening in Its Place

The New Year is bringing some big changes to the north side of Schulenburg.

Balzer Feed Mill will close its doors on January 31. The business dates to 1953 when Gus Balzer added a feed mill operation to his existing cotton gin business. Long-time Balzar employee Leroy “Buddy” McBride purchased part of the business in the 1970s. McBride passed away in 2014. His children Gary McBride and Debbie Darilek operated the business after their father retired.

Darilek told the Record that an individual was purchasing the property and planned to clear it for a future development, but Darilek said she did not know any details about the development. The Record spoke with another source close to the deal who said a group of investors planned to build a John Deere tractor dealership on the property.

“It’s going to be a sea of green,” the source said.
