As a law student, Laura Viada often joined a study group at the home of one of her fellow students.
The home was filled with fiber art.
Laura was fascinated and thought to herself, “I would rather be doing that.” And with that, Law became a vocation, and weaving her joy.
Warp and Weft
The title of the show, “Apparitions,” open now at Copper Shade Tree in Round Top, evokes a mysterious mental picture of ghosts or angels. Laura explains that the very nature of her weaving allows the viewer to see through the piece to the space behind it. Those images are filtered through the sheer woven fabric with the design in the weave itself creating shapes and images. The background blends with the weaving creating those apparitions. There is a basic premise to know about weaving: the warp threads are the long threads placed on the loom and the weft are the threads that go from right to left. The words “weft” and “left” rhyme, making these weaving terms easier for this writer to remember.
