Flatonia Voters to Consider Sales Tax Reroute for EDC

Voters in the Flatonia will decide on May 6 whether the City should incorporate an economic development corporation, or EDC.

If voters approve the ballot initiative, the City would reallocate one-half of a percent of its sales tax toward the EDC. The EDC would be led by a seven-member board appointed by the City Council. The organization would be able to use the sales tax revenue for projects designed to attract businesses to Flatonia.

The City collected about $307,000 in sales tax last year. If local sales figures stay about the same, the EDC would receive a little over $100,000 a year.

Flatonia City Manager Mark McLaughlin said the EDC’s primary focus would be directed toward infrastructure projects.
