Texas Polka News Celebrates Cajun Music

Article Image Alt Text

The April issue of Texas Polka News celebrates the family tradition of Cajun bands, most notably the Dallas Street Ramblers. The band from Port Neches features Elizabeth Kelley, the first woman to win Texas Folklife’s Big Squeeze Contest. Also in this issue, Editor Gary E. McKee delves into the music inspired by the road to Texas independence.

TPN remembers Helen Shimek Malick of Hallettsville – great accordionist, Czech cook, and mom to 13. The paper also recognizes some impressive milestones: Beethoven Maennerchor in San Antonio celebrated 150 years, New Baden Jamboree celebrated the 100th birthday of its founder, and the Till twins - Alfred and Felix - celebrated their 90th birthday in Red Rock.
