I Worked Like A Mule And Walked Behind One Too!

My Dad owned a pair of mules and still did minor work with them until they finally died of old age in 1960. I’m happy to say I can recall working with them myself in my early years growing up. I was too young to harness them, but once my Dad got them harnessed, I did get a chance to work with them.

On one occasion, he got me out of school one day. He had just planted his bottom patch in the post oak field and he wanted me to “roll” the cotton. To roll the cotton one would run over the moist rows containing the seeds with a pair of steel wheels, which were about eight inches wide.
