County Judge Ike J. Petras signed a proclamation designating April 30-May 7 as Soil Stewardship Week in Fayette County. On hand for the signing were Fayette Soil and Water Conservation District No. 341 members of the board of supervisors: Arnold W. Fietsam, chairman; as well as Henry Boehnke, Milton F. Behnke and Emil Zemlicka.

The Swiss Alp community was preparing for special events on May 12 to 14 when the Philadelphia Lutheran Church of Swiss Alp was to observe its 100th anniversary. With a centennial theme of “Led by the Spirit,” the Sunday festivities were to mark the official merger of Trinity Lutheran Church, Black Jack; Salem Lutheran Church, Freyburg; and Philadelphia Lutheran Church, Swiss Alp. The membership of the new church, United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Swiss Alp, was expected to include 200 families.
