One of State’s First Three Legal Cannabis Dispensaries to be Located Here
One of Texas’ first legal cannabis dispensaries got preliminary approval last week to begin operations in the Schulenburg area. That’s just a stoner’s throw from Interstate 10, one of the nation’s busiest corridors for the black market marijuana trade.
The Texas Department of Public Safety announced on May 1 the names of three organizations conditionally approved to dispense low-THC cannabis for epilepsy patients through Texas’ Compassionate Use Program.
Low-THC cannabis is a variety of marijuana that has been genetically modified to produce only a small amount of the tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, produced by normal cannabis plants. THC is the substance mostly responsible for the euphoric and pain relieving effects of ingesting cannabis. Low-THC cannabis retains many other substances, which some researchers believe may help patients with otherwise untreatable epilepsy.
DPS accepted applications from 43 organizations wishing to participate in the Compassionate Use Program. The agency ranked the applicants on the basis of security plans, financial responsibility, accountability, technical and technological ability, infrastructure and cover letter.
Cansortium Texas Llc. was the highest ranked the highest with a score of 93.62333 on a 100-point scale. The DPS Media and Communications office confirmed with the Record on Tuesday that Cansortium’s operations will be based in the Schulenburg area.
The Record has also learned that Cansortium’s operations will take place at an existing agricultural facility in the area.
