Remember When?
July 11-14, 1967
Crowds turned out to see the nation’s first lady, Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, during her tour of historic sites in Caldwell and Fayette counties. Welcomed at Praha by the Rev. Marcus Anthony Valenta and children wearing Czech costumes, Mrs. Johnson was presented with an orchid corsage, sunbonnet and bouquet of carnations by Karen Drozd. After viewing the church and cemetery, Mrs. Johnson briefly spoke to the crowd. Although the tour caravan was several hours behind schedule when it arrived at Monument Hill Park, Mrs. Johnson was most interested in the site. At the final stop on the First Lady’s tour, the ladies of Round Top’s Do Your Duty Club had prepared a special treat. In Round Top’s educational building, refreshments were served on a table set with silver and china, highlighted by a bouquet of bluebells, Mrs. Johnson’s favorite flower. Miss Ima Hogg provided the centerpiece.
