Remember When?

August 4-8, 1967

Cotton ginning had started in La Grange, but at a very slow pace. The Kasper Michalk Gin had turned out four bales up to press time, all from the same farmer, Gus Schubert of the Rabb’s Prairie community. His first two bales weighed 575 and 565 pounds. The first bale for La Grange Gin Corp. was brought in my Mrs. Mathilda Zbranek from her farm in the Golden Valley community.

Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported that during the first week of July, four were jailed – three for DWI and one drunk, several were arrested at the Cistern Dance. One was jailed for driving while his license was suspended and trips were made to Flatonia and Fayetteville for investigations. A call was made to a wreck near Warrenton and two peace trips were made to Round Top. A call was made to Kirtley and one was jailed for disturbing the peace. The sheriff’s department also provided an escort for Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson while she was in the county.
