A Sense of Normalcy

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, many find themselves looking for a sense of normalcy.

For children, school becomes a refuge away from the craziness that has just played out in their lives. Their teachers become surrogate parents during the day. As the days go on, these students will have many issues to deal with. Where are we going to live? We don’t have a way to wash our clothes. We didn’t get to eat last night. These statements will be more common than before. The teachers are the people who will be dealing with these issues on a daily basis. The teachers are the people who the students will look to for comfort during the day.

When I was teaching I had the experience of living through a few small tornadoes during the school day. After those episodes, there were always a few students who became very anxious every time there was a thunderstorm or we were under a tornado watch. It affected the climate of the whole classroom. The students were distracted and I spent many hours comforting those traumatized students.
