Remember When?

Sept. 29, 1967

An open house to introduce Fayette County residents to their new 60-bed Fayette Memorial Hospital was set for Sun., Oct. 1. The hospital’s total cost of $1,062,901 had been funded by cash reserves built up by the hospital, a fundraising campaign that collected in excess of $325,000, which paved the way for a federal Hill-Burton grant of $450,000. Called “a dream come true,” the new hospital had been in development for 17 years because, before it could be constructed, a sizable purchase debt had to be paid off and a cash reserve built up.

The new Fayette Memorial Hospital had a staff of 45, which included six registered nurses in addition to the administrator, Miss Ida Reichardt, and four licensed vocational nurses, along with office and kitchen personnel, technicians, aides, etc. The registered nurses were Mrs. Elizabeth G. Tilton, Mrs. Cecilia Lidiak, Mrs. Walter R. Garza, Mrs. Clarence Oestreich, Mrs. F. J. Stadter and Mrs. Eugene Winkler. Technicians included Mrs. Atlan Citzler and Mrs. Carl E. Dement. The anesthetist was Mrs. Arthur Pohl.
