First Week of Food & Fellowship Reveals Flood Victims Still Facing Uncertain Future

Flood evacuees Virginia and Daniel Olenick ate lasagne last Thursday evening at the Food and Fellowship event in the VFW Hall. It was hosted by area church volunteers from the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn and Sts.Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Plum.

The Olenicks were two of approximately 150 victims served that evening. That same number of people were also served on Monday and on Tuesday of last week. The 15 volunteer churches and women’s groups, organized by the La Grange Area Ministerial Alliance, plan to serve hot meals 5-6:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall on the La Grange Fair Grounds as long as there is a significant need for people like the Olenicks, who continue to be affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Tears came to Virginia’s eyes when she said, “It’s hardest to go through and to sift through everything.”

“Then it all goes into the trash,” added Daniel, who has retired with a medical disability from oil field work.

They lost all their furniture, including a pie safe that had been in the family for 150 years ...
