George Quentin Sheffield
On Oct. 6, 2017, at age 69, George Quentin (just ‘Q’ to some) Sheffield completed his bucket list and most of his honey- do’s and confidently sailed into the other side of eternity to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on Aug. 1, 1948 in Houston, his home town was Baytown, where he grew up around a great group of kids. Though not much of a musician, he was proud to have been part of Charlie Forque’s Famous Robert E. Lee Marching Band, performing in the Astrodome’s 1965 grand opening for the Astros and later for the Houston Oilers. He graduated with The Class of 1966 from Robert E. Lee High School. He attended college but never graduated, instead wanting to ‘get on with his life’. Quickly finding a niche in the fast growing IT industry, he made a career of it in Houston, being blessed to work at a few pretty good companies with some great folks who were mostly smarter than him and are still friends. Never broke a bone but nearly drowned once. Always showed up in person. Solo backpacked in the Colorado Mountains. Never won a trophy, but in his 40s he completed numerous long-distance bike events, including the Houston-to-Austin MS 150 for nine consecutive years. Once biked across the state of Texas in seven days. At age 65 jumped out of ‘a perfectly good airplane’ along with his 60 year old brother and 70 year old sister. His ‘bookend’ siblings are like that. He got the video. Over the years he had several hobbies: photography, restoring an old sports car and settled on woodworking. His proudest accomplishments are his three favorite daughters Crispin Marie Gale (Ureste) of Victoria, Sarah Michele Holland of Spring and Allison May Williford of Houston. Crispin blessed him with three of his favorite granddaughters Brittany, Morgan and Lauren. Sarah blessed him with his other favorites Hayley and Benjamin. Allison gave him his favorite granddogs, Zeppy and Willie, true leaders of the pack. Three other huge blessings in his life are his three sonsin- laws, Andrew Ureste, Grey Holland, and Dawson Williford. These men take great care of his three daughters and their families and love them unconditionally. Each son-in-law is an answer to prayers asked many years ago over his daughters. The turning point of his life came at the age of 32 when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior along with daughter Crispin. They were baptized together. In the following years he was blessed to answer the invitation hand-in-hand with Sarah and later with Allison as they made decisions to accept Christ. Three of the best days of his life. He also watched each of his granddaughters’ baptisms following their decisions to accept Christ. The absolute best move of his life came in 1979 when he married above his station to the love of his life Pamela Kay Morris Sheffield. She brought peace, joy, fun, caring, affection and greatly needed spiritual leadership to his life. Together they had numerous great adventures, backpacking in Texas and Colorado, raising their daughters, and in 2009 moved out to the country in Fayette County where they built their dream home. They embraced the community and joined Flatonia Baptist church, making life-long friendships. They were greatly blessed beyond expectations with their wonderful East Parker Road neighbors and friends. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Accolade Hospice in Yoakum, Texas for their time, hearts and love they gave to Quentin during his last three weeks at home. Each nurse was truly a blessing to our family. A joyful memorial celebration of his life will be held at Flatonia Baptist Church in Flatonia, Texas on Nov. 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. Mr. Sheffield (Q) suggested that in lieu of flowers, please send Pam chocolate or make a meaningful contribution to the Youth Fund at Flatonia Baptist Church … or both.
