Remember When?

Oct. 27-31, 1967

Despite the valiant efforts of local volunteer firemen who battled the blaze for more than four hours, First Baptist Church, located at the corner of E. Colorado and N. Madison, was badly gutted by fire late Sunday night. The tower and bell caved into the structure and the brick walls that remained standing were dangerously warped by the intense heat. Cause of the fire was unknown. The regular evening worship had been held there hours earlier, but nothing appeared amiss at that time. Fireman Allan Mueller, who sustained a cut hand from flying glass, had to have five stitches, and several other firefighters were overcome by smoke.
