Christmas Traditions, Old and New

After reading Elaine Thomas’ article on Audrey Huenefeld’s memories of Christmas, I started remembering my childhood Christmases.

One of my earliest memories is about the Sears catalog. In the few months before Christmas, we would receive the Sears Christmas catalog. In it were all the latest toys. My mom told me to look through that catalog and mark the things I most wanted. She reminded me that Santa would only bring one of those things, so I needed to make sure I only marked the ones that I really wanted. After many days of page turning, I would usually choose three things that I most wanted and sure enough, Santa would bring whichever one he thought I most deserved.

We would decorate the white-flocked Christmas tree with green balls and other handmade ornaments, each year there would be new ones added. We would wrap our light pole with red and white striped ribbon so it resembled a candy cane and hang garland in the window. We would wrap presents to take to family members who lived far away and always baked cookies.
