Remember When?

Feb. 9, 1968

Dr. F. T. Barfield, who was associated with the Dr. Youens Eye Clinic at Columbus, escaped with minor bruises when the Cessna Super Skymaster airplane he was flying made an emergency landing in the field just beyond the runway at Flieger Field near Schulenburg. Witnesses reported that Dr. Barfield’s plane lost power shortly after it was airborne. Upon landing, the wheels got caught in soft soil and the airplane “nosed over.”

Conroe’s powerful Tigers defeated La Grange’s Leopard cagers for the second time that season when they annexed an 86-54 District 10-3A triumph in the Conroe gym. Although defeated, the Leps produced the game’s high point man in Ira Collins, who sent 27 points through the hoops. Shellie Hatch contributed 11 points. La Grange also dropped the B game, 66-33, with Gene Kruppa pacing the Lep undergrads with an 11-point effort.
