Remember When?
March 1-5, 1968
The prediction was a young Hostyn area dairyman would likely need three to six months to regain full use of his right arm following a farm accident. Robert B. “Bobby” Kallus was driving his tractor equipped with a post hole digger attachment over a terrace when the foot end of the digger caught on the ground causing the heavy top to swing backward. It struck Kallus across the right shoulder. The impact was so severe it cracked the tractor seat.
Although the blow caused Kallus to blackout for several seconds, he revived before the tractor hit a tree. Although painfully hurt, he managed to disengage the three-point hookup and drive his tractor home before virtually collapsing. With the help of neighbors and kin, he and his family were grateful to still be able to manage their round-theclock dairy operation.
