Polnick
Annie Mary (Dach, Staha) Polnick died March 22, 2018, after a six month decline in health, during her stay at the Schulenburg Regency Nursing Center. She was 93 years of age. Annie was born near High Hill on April 2, 1924. She lived a long and productive life. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Julius (Sonny) and wife Maureen; Eugene and wife Barbara and Annie’s two grandchildren, Rebecca and Sean; Diane McCuan and Annie’s two grandchildren, Wayne and Michelle. Her surviving great- grandchildren from Michelle Hammack and husband Daniel are Zach, Hope, Ellie and Olivia. Her surviving great-grandchild from Wayne McCuan III is Shelby. Her surviving great-grandchild from Christie Hugo is Christopher. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Mary Dach, her first husband, Julius Staha, her brother, Anton Dach, her sister, Rosie Vrana, her daughter’s husband Wayne Mc- Cuan II, her grandchild Christie McCuan Hugo and her husband Dale Hugo, and her loving husband of 45 years, Gilbert Polnick. Annie and her two younger siblings lost their father in 1929 and their mother in 1933. Their Grandma Dach raised them. Annie married Julius Staha in 1945 and brought 3 children into the world. At the age of 28, Annie found herself a single mom in Houston, TX needing to care for her children. Annie worked hard to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. In Houston, Annie met Gilbert Polnick. A gentle giant of a man with a heart big enough to love and marry her in 1956 and also, to love and adopt her 3 children a short time later. The entire family enjoyed attending functions, playing bingo and dancing at the SPJST Lodge 88 and also, worshipping at Trinity Lutheran Church. Annie and Gilbert built a good life together, rich with family, friends and shared dreams. They shared a common goal of owning land and retiring in the country. They bought a piece of land near where Annie was born and kept buying other adjoining parcels of land over the years. They worked in Houston and spent weekends building and developing the land. When Annie and Gilbert retired, they sold their property in Houston and moved to the Schulenburg area full time. They enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting and playing dominos with their friends. The farm, nicknamed “Polnick Pastures” became a place for extended family get- togethers. After Gilbert’s passing in 2002, she continued to work the farm. Several years later, Annie wanting the farm to remain in the family, took the necessary steps to make that happen. As the farm became difficult for Annie to handle, she moved to the College Place. There she lived with old school mates, friends and relatives. They were all cared for by a loving and helpful staff. This was a happy and peaceful time for Annie. Her last years were spent at the Regency Nursing Center. Again, a place with familiar faces and also, a super caring staff. In her life, God blessed her abundantly with love. May you rest in peace Annie, a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great- Grandmother, Good Neighbor and Friend. Friends are cordially invited to gather and visit with family and share remembrances of Annie at the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
