Mary Sue “Susie” Woodward, 90, formally of Weimar, passed away on March 26, 2018 at Regency Nursing Home in Schulenburg. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She was born on Dec. 2, 1927 in Haileyville, Okla., the daughter of Edna (Owen) and George W. Moody. She married Ed Woodward on Dec. 24, 1948 in her parents’ home. After graduating from Haileyville High School, she enrolled in the Cadet Nurse Corps. She completed her training and became a Registered Nurse in August 1948. Ed and Susie relocated often during Ed’s career with Shell Oil Company. Along the way, she worked as a nurse at Methodist Hospital in Houston and Youens Memorial Hospital in Weimar, Texas. She also worked as the Colorado County public health nurse, as school nurse in Denver City, Texas and at the family practice of Dr. Frank Guidry in Slidell, Louisiana. Ed and Susie retired in 1985 and moved to Alleyton, Texas and later settled in a new home in Weimar, Texas. Ed and Susie were known for their portrayal of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. For more than 25 years, they appeared as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus at churches in Weimar, Texas, Slidell, Louisiana and Columbus, Texas, in parades, for children in the Shriners Hospital for Children in Houston and at other charitable events. Susie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Weimar and a volunteer at the Colorado-Fayette Medical Center. She was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America, the Petroleum Wives club and later the Red Hat Society. She loved talking to her sister Martha; they chatted on the phone on every day possible. She also enjoyed entertaining, traveling and shopping. Most of all, Susie loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her son, Mike Woodward and wife Judy of La Grange; grandchildren, Angela Spangenberg and husband Kyle of Austin; Elizabeth Griffith and husband Joel of San Antonio; and Chris Woodward and wife Angel of Huntersville, N.C.; great grandchildren, Eddie Spangenberg, Billy Spangenberg, Jane Griffith and Carmen Woodward, nephews Kirk and Keith Tinker and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Patrick Woodward; brother, Perry Moody, and sisters Pearl Wade and Martha Tinker.
