Community Held Together By the Printed Word

Unlike the pioneers who harnessed real equine power for their cross-country journey, my emigration to this part of Texas from more northern parts was a cautious three-day drive on paved roads in a 1962 Chevy Corvair (famous for torching folks during collisions.) Rural upstate New York, where I was born and educated from grade school to college, was cold. Winters during the 50s there had the charm of a glacier in training.

Texas on the other hand was a red hot entrepreneurial mecca with weather to match. Not that a freezing cold front or hurricane off the Gulf didn’t demand respect. Houston’s sprawl in the late 60s pressed the coastal plains into ever growing circles of suburban communities anchored to a ship channel and the flats of San Jacinto where outnumbered Sam Houston forces routed Santa Anna. It was the city where I would spend the next 50 years in entrepreneuring adventure.
