Remember when?

May 3, 1968

Fayette County Republicans were holding their primary as a consolidated precinct in the Schaefer Building on N. Main St. in Schulenburg on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election officials were Mr. and Mrs. John Yarling and Richard E. McCreary Jr., executive committee chairman.

Two contests for county commissioner and one for a constable’s position were the only local races. However, a spirited gubernatorial campaign in which 10 candidates were striving for the state’s highest office was expected to bring out Democratic voters in record numbers for the primary. The interest on the home front was in Precinct 1 (La Grange) where dairymanfarmer Martin Manuel sought to unseat Gunther Behrens in his bid for reelection as county commissioner. V. A. Hrbacek, owner of the Cottonwood Inn and Motel, was running against H. L. (Lawrence) Adamcik, incumbent, for constable. In Precinct 3 (Flatonia), county commissioner Eddie Zouzalik was opposed in his reelection bid by Flatonia area farmer and rancher Edward T. Mica.
