Oil and gas wells provided economic output for Fayette County of approximately $761,000 a year, according to statistics released by the Texas Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association. Based on U.S. Bureau of Mines production figures for 1966, Fayette County produced crude oil valued at $748,000 and natural gas worth $13,000. With total production of some 252,000 barrels of oil and 104 million cubic feet of natural gas, Fayette County ranked 170th among Texas counties.

Emil Berger of the Ammannsville community was named Fayette County Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year. Mr. Berger, who was raised on a farm, moved to Houston and worked for 10 years before he could afford to start his own. In 1936, he bought 225 acres of sloping land with no terraces, lots of cockleburs, Bermuda and Johnson grasses and gullies that could not be crossed with teams or a tractor.
