Fayette County voters joined Texas Democrats to give lieutenant governor Preston Smith a better than 2-1 majority in the gubernatorial runoff election which would virtually sweep the 56-year-old into the Texas governor’s mansion. In this county, Smith polled 1,961 votes compared to 895 for his runoff opponent, Houston attorney Don Yarborough. Smith, of Lubbock, was to face Republican Paul Eggers, 48, of Wichita Falls in the November general election. Texas had not elected a GOP governor since 1869 Reconstruction days.
