Yes, in My Backyard

Not in my backyard!

I have heard this over various issues all my life. Now don’t get me wrong. No one wants a nuclear waste facility next to their property, no one wants a garbage dump next to their house and no one wants a pig farm in the middle of town. On that, it seems, we can all agree.

But, when it came to housing, whether it was about race, religion or socio-economic status, there were people who had a problem with those who were different from themselves.

I thought we were beyond the prejudices of the past – that we would not judge people by those issues, at least not around here. Apparently, I was wrong.
