K9 Unit Seizes $2.1 Million in Meth
The Fayette County K9 Narcotics Unit seized $2.1 million worth of methamphetamine in a traffic stop on Friday, June 15.
Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on at approximately 11:06 a.m. last Friday, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K9 partner Lobos stopped a Saturn SUV on Interstate 10 about three miles west of Flatonia for a traffic violation. The Saturn was heading east on the interstate.
"After speaking to the driver and passenger, Thumann observed many conflicting details in the travel itinerary," the Sheriff's report stated. "Thumann became suspicious that the vehicle was being utilized to transport illegal narcotics from Mexico to Houston."
Thumann was given consent to search the vehicle and deployed his canine Lobos to conduct and exterior sweep of the vehicle. Lobos alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics. Thumann and Investigator David Smith accessed the vehicles gas tank which was being utilized to conceal packages of methamphetamine. Thumann and Smith removed approximately 21 kilograms of meth with an estimated street value of $2.1 million dollars.
The driver, Mercedes Galvan, 26, and passenge, Ilse Solis, 24, both from Laredo, were transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.
